Over the next few decades, his repeated success in pushing technology to achieve transformational results led him to be tapped for several distinguished opportunities in India and abroad. He set up signaling systems for the Nigerian Railways in the 70s/80s. Unfazed by exponential changes in technology he kept his learnings sharp and at par with the latest. He pioneered optical fiber cabling for the Indian Railways after a government visit to Japan and the USSR. After retiring as Chief of Signal & Telecom from the Indian Railways, the Taiwan Railways hired him as a consultant. He passed away in 2021 and is survived by his wife of 50+ years, Veena, 3 children, and 6 grandchildren.

  • Mr. Amrit Lal Goel

    B.E. (Mechanical Engg.)1961 batch

    Read tribute

Dr. Goel was born to Gujjar Mal and Shanti Devi, in the small town of Mukundpur in India, on March 4, 1938. He was the oldest of seven siblings. He was hard working and with encouragement & support from his parents, he qualified for admission to the premier engineering college – Roorkee University. He graduated with a BE in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. After a brief stint with Bhabha Atomic Research Institute in Bombay he decided to pursue higher education and came to the US in 1963. Dr. Goel received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees (1968) from the University of Wisconsin,Madison. He then joined Syracuse University in 1968 as an Assistant professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and retired in 2013 as Professor Emeritus. He also taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and was a visiting professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Technical University of Vienna. Dr. Goel published extensively and advised PhD students on a wide range of topics including quality control and reliability, hypothesis testing, databases, parallel architectures and data mining algorithms. His contributions fall into two main areas – Industrial Quality Control and Software Reliability. A common theme in all his work is the application of statistical techniques to solve engineering problems. Dr. Goel’s contributions in the field of quality control are in the areas of control charts and sampling plans, both topics of great practical importance in industry. This included the development of tools for economic design of control charts, and applications of Bayesian methods to the design of sampling plans. A particularly noteworthy contribution was the development of a nomogram – a graphical procedure – for the design of cumulative sum charts. In the days prior to the advent of personal computers, the applicable mathematical equations were difficult to solve, and the nomogram was particularly useful to design cumulative sum charts. The Goel – Okumoto (GO), statistical model which was published in a journal in 1979 is still the most frequently referenced paper in the field. He also co-authored a book titled: Object Oriented Software Testing, (Springer Verlag, 2000).
